The George Eastman Museum is located in Rochester, New York, on the estate of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film and a visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist. Founded in 1947, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum holds unparalleled photographic collections with several million objects. The institution is also a longtime leader in film preservation and photographic conservation. The museum is also home to a leading library of literature on photography and cinema in the world; it is accessible by appointment.

At all times, there are at least three temporary exhibits—most of which change about every four months—in the main exhibition galleries, the Project Gallery for contemporary works, the Collection Gallery, and on the second floor of the mansion.

For almost thirty years in the early twentieth century, George Eastman lived in the historic mansion and enjoyed its gardens. The house is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Several times a day, docents lead tours of the mansion, gardens and exhibition galleries.

The Lakeshores’24 tour will be Friday, September 20, 2024 at 10AM and will include a private 45 minute tour of the mansion followed by a self-guided tour through the rest of the museum and estate.

A total of 2 hours at the museum is suggested. Visitors should be aware that there is a fair amount of walking and standing. Cost is $20 each for up to 15 people. Pre-registration is required.

Genesee Brew House Tour

25 Cataract Street, Rochester, NY 14605–25 minutes from Hotel geneseebeer.com/brewhouse/

Friday, September 20–1 pm to 2 pm

The Genesee Brew House, established in 2012, is a beer destination, featuring interactive exhibits, multimedia content, gift shop, pilot brewery and pub-style restaurant. The Brew House was created to capture and share with you the long history of the Genesee Brewery–one of the largest and oldest continually operating breweries in America.

The building itself was a packaging center on the original Genesee Brewery campus more than 100 years ago. It’s been transformed into a special place that tells the story of brewing beer in Rochester, NY and is dedicated to the hardworking people who have brewed the iconic Genesee Beers for generations.

After the 45 to 60 minute guided tour, consider enjoying a cold Genesee beer, perhaps a quick meal at the restaurant, and hitting the gift shop. There’s a good chance you might even see a train on the nearby CSX/Amtrak mainline near the Rochester station.

The tour is on Friday afternoon, September 20, 2024 at 1PM. It’s free but limited to 15 guests. Pre-registration on the Lakeshores’24 Registration Form is highly recommended.

Non-rail Crafts

Schedule for Non-Rail Crafts:
Thursday 12PM to 7PM
Friday 8:30AM to 9PM
Saturday 8:30PM to 4PM

Something other than trains? One of the rooms in the Lakeshores’24 convention space will be reserved for non-rail crafts. Several of the women in our division have come up with some  hand-sewing projects for those interested.

The first will be part of a quilting project that’s been a Cohocton, NY, community effort, for at least 20 years. Groups get together and hand embroider 12” blocks; 15 of those blocks and 15  pieced blocks are turned into a quilt that’s raffled off each June, with the proceeds benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. We will have 15 or so of those blocks that our Lakeshores group can prepare. After the convention, the blocks will be included in one of the 2025 Cohocton quilts.

Another project is a coaster made from train fabric and batting. The template and materials are provided, or you could bring your own fabrics. The coaster is a make-and-take project. There’s also small stocking ornaments or pincushion ornament projects that may be available.…and if you have your own project, by all means bring it along and enjoy the company.

The non-rail crafts are being organized by Kathy Krivitza, Kathy Demarco, Carolyn Spiller, Karen Kosydar Arcus and Eileen Fairbanks.
