As a software engineer that started building a train layout, I was looking for ways to play with my trains. I wondered “What if my train layout could generate scenarios and give me tasks to complete?”.
Through use of RFID, scanners, and some extra tablets, I have built the framework of a project I call “Virtual Freight”. Pickup and deliver loads of goods and deliver them to the appropriate destinations on the layout. Animated terminals show the current action and status of the freight stations, using custom software I have written.
Though the project is in its infancy, I am continuing to develop and build out the project – all in search of a fun time!
