In 1931, during the Great Depression, the Boston & Maine Railroad concocted a new idea to put railroad crews and passenger equipment to work on weekends, and the concept of a “snow train” was born – where train service would bring skiers to the mountains of New Hampshire. Dave will explain how the concept of a snow train developed, how it changed the local economy in areas such as North Conway, NH, and how it quickly helped introduce North America to Alpine skiing. This new activity attracted lots of young people. How many of us have grandparents who first met on a Snow Train from North Station? If you have, or are thinking about a snow scene on your layout, adding a snow train to the schedule would add lots of interest.
