Following World War II, due to changing design aestetics of the era, the Erie railroad began a program to modernize, refurbish and upgrade its passenger equipment. Most notably, the cars that were affected became Erie’s modernized coaches and diners.
The Erie Business Car Society (EBCS) is the proud owner of an example of each of these cars as well as Business Car #1. Modernized diner, Erie 941/EL 741, was donated earlier this year to the EBCS by the Dining Car Society (DCS) in Port Jervis, NY.
The first part of this presentation will discuss the history of the car from its original ownership by Pullman and “pool” service assignment to the Atlantic Coast Line, through its service to the Erie, EL, Conrail, and start of restoration by DCS, and the progress made by EBCS since its donation.
The second part will focus on modelling the car from scratch, employing 3D printing, laser cutting and metal casting to create accurate parts for the model.
