The Lake Ontario Shore Railroad is patterned after the western end of the New York Central’s former Rome, Watertown, & Ogdensburg branch, which was known as the Hojack Line, during the 1950s and 60s. A Time Table & Train Order operating system, with car cards and waybills for car forwarding, are used. Communication is face-to-face, as trains traverse the single track mainline, working the towns along the way. There are interfaces with the three on-line yards in Webster, Sodus, and Oswego. The railroad is point to point, with staging at each end. Three other railroads, the Erie, the Pennsylvania, and the NYO&W, interchange with the Hojack.
